Cleaning Up After the Holidays

The new year is here.

Hello, 2021!

Good riddance, 2020!

December was full of election scandal, delayed deliveries, and plexiglass protected Santas.

Hopefully, you had the opportunity to slow down and enjoy the true meaning of Christmas with people you love. Most of us had small gatherings with some, but, not all of our family members.

Your children or grandchildren still had gifts from Santa and from each other. You had the opportunity to celebrate with eggnog, apple cider, turkey, and (for those of us in the south) pecan pie. Thank God, we are still so very blessed.

While our homes were full of very welcomed guests, there were also some visitors that “hitchhiked” in with them. Yes. We need to account for the bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens that our loved ones unknowingly brought with them.

How can you make sure that your home is free of the unwanted guests that refused to leave?

Clean that house!

A Germ-Free Home

Here are a few things that may help get you in the right mindset before you wage war on those pesky invaders:

1. Open windows.
  • Fresh outside air is great for diluting any problems with inside air.
2. De-Clutter.
  • It is tough to get rid of germs when they are protected by things we no longer need.
3. Wash all towels, tablecloths, linens, etc.
  • Those hidden pathogens tend to have a much shorter lifespan in the washing machine and dryer.
4. Use microfiber cloths to wipe all commonly touched surfaces.
  • Microfiber cloths remove 99% of bacteria using only water. With a qualified disinfectant cleaner, they are even more effective against those harmful pathogens.
  • Make sure to wipe door handles, door frames, doors, light switch plates, handrails, chairs, counters, sink fixtures, toilets, etc.
5. Use spray disinfectants to sanitize fabrics.
  • Spray upholstered furniture, drapes and curtains, and even carpets.
6. Run the HVAC system fan in the “ON” position even when the indoor temperature is optimal.
  • Circulating air makes it hard for viruses and bacteria to thrive. This is one of our greatest defenses against germs.
Even Deeper

There are more specialized methods that we can do that can help kill even more of these germs.
  • HEPA air filters
  • Ozone shock treatments
  • Ionizing air filters
  • Hydroxyl treatments
  • Fogging disinfectants
